Voice of a Generation

My piece features Kendrick Lamar, the first rapper to win the Pulitzer Prize. Lamar always looks to give back to the community that give light to his momentous music career and inspire younger generations on how to adapt and overcome the ever-changing world. Through the use of color, alignment, and value, Kendrick pops as the subject of the art, followed by the word “Inspire” as his commitment to helping the world through music is admirable. The art was created using both Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. After cutting out the right image, I traced it, adding layers of multiple differing colors on top. The big idea behind the work was to create a piece that would evoke feelings of hope to show anyone that anything is possible. Lamar was chosen as he is an advocate for not only the younger generations, but older ones too as his musical impact has an extensive range. Going into the project, my goal was to pay homage to Kendrick Lamar while improving my ability to use both Illustrator and Photoshop. I feel as if I accomplished both of these goals as the exposure to both the platforms allowed me to become more comfortable with them both. Overall, I am happy with the final product and it will influence future projects as I am now more comfortable with using both platforms and will look to use them to the fullest.

  1. The subject of the photo is Kendrick Lamar, the well renowned Compton rapper. I really like how contrast is utilized, notably the contrast between each section of Kendrick and its respective background section (the dark purple section of Kendrick contrasts with the light purple half of the background and the light purple section contrasts with the dark purple half of the background). I like how the image uses repetition throughout the hair and the torso. I also think that alignment is utilized well in the image, because of the space between Kendrick and the top of the border, it actually feels like he’s looking up, rather than just arbitrarily being positioned a certain way. The image also uses proximity with Kendrick being close to the border of the frame. I think that the color enhances the image, because as previously mentioned, it creates contrast between Kendrick and the background. While I like how the top of Kendrick’s face somewhat blends in with the background, I think it could be improved if there was more of a seamless transition from his face to the background.

  2. The subject in this photo is Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick Lamar is a famous rapper who many people are inspired by in today’s rap game. I would definitely say that my favorite aspect of this artwork is the contrast that was used. It is really noticeable in between each part of Kendrick and the background. The dark purple section of Kendrick contrasts with the light purple half of the background and the light purple section contrasts with the dark purple half of the background. The other things that I think is used really well in this artwork is the alignment. This is because of the the top of the border and the subject. The only advice that I would give is to do a little more with the background. I feel like of there was some kind of pattern in half of the background, it would go along with the subject more.

  3. The subject of the artwork is Kendrick Lamar, a world-renowned rapper and hip-hop artist. He is famous for bringing authentic black stories to mainstream radio in the form of good music and is one of the most recognizable names in music today.

The contrast used is very subtle but effective. The different shades of purple used for Kendrick are close in shade but distinct enough to see the differences in Kendrick’s features, so it works. Repetition is used as lines in Kendrick’s hair and shirt, which provides a nice change of depth from the simple block-colors everywhere else in the artwork. I also like the alignment of Kendrick in the center with the word “inspire” displayed vertically and flush-left. It provides an extra complex element to the piece. Finally, the proximity is handled very well, as the word “inspire” is spaced nicely from the border and the kerning appears fairly even across all letters.

I think the colors chosen work very well, and the shades of purple used for the background and Kendrick himself are similar yet distinctive. This allows me to clearly see the shape of Kendrick’s face and body. I also like the inclusion of pink lettering in the word “inspire,” as it adds a nice bright color that contrasts the purple subject and background.

Some advice I would give is to clean up Kendrick’s forehead, as it looks like most of it was cut off for some reason. It is the only part of the artwork that looks somewhat awkward, but other than that, I really like the poster.

  4. The subject of the piece is Kendrick Lamar, a very notable and influential rapper of our time. The contrast in this piece is what stands out the most, and what really makes this poster pop. The contrast really helps highlight and focus on the main part of the poster, Kendrick. For example, the dark purple and the light purple help bring out the light and dark purple parts of Kendrick. I think alignment is another very key part of the success of this poster. It makes it feel like he’s looking up, which is pretty cool. Repetition is very prominent in this piece, mainly through the hair and the torso, which is very creative. Proximity is also used here, as Kendrick is close to the border of the frame itself. The colors used here really illuminate the image of kendrick and help enhance the topics of CRAP. I think one improvement that could be made the that the forehead could be made a bit clearer, but overall it’s very impressive.

  5. The Subject of this piece of art is Kendrick Lamar, who is a Famous Compton Rapper. I really like the contrast that is used here. The Dark Purple and the Light Purple really contrast each other well on Kendrick. I really like the repetition of the Lines used on the head and body. The alignment is used well here. Kendrick is placed in the middle of the screen and I can focus on it perfectly. The proximity between the Letters and Image is really good. The Letters are placed in perfect position between each other. The use of Purple really enhances the image and I can really tell the difference between the Hair and Skin. I think it can be improved by taking away some of the lines. I feel like there’s just too much.

  6. The subject of this poster is Kendrick Lamar, who is a famous rapper. I really like the contrast that is used in the poster. The contrast helps highlight the focus on the main part of the poster. I like the use of repetition on the lines on the body in the head. The colors used really help make the image pop. One improvement that I might make would be to make his forehead a little clearer.
